The Honorable Wally Herger
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515-0502
Dear Congressman Herger:
I am writing as a follow-up to your conversations with Dick O'Sullivan (from the radio call-in show) and Wally Roney. Both of these members in good standing indicated their converstions with you resulted in the following:
1) Your commitment to work with Senator Craig's office to "fix" the bill to totally remove any and all impacts of the bill on livestock permittees.
2) Your commitment to have the bill "killed" should the necessary amendments not be incorporated in the legislation.
3) I will be the contact on the issue and will keep my affected membership informed as to the progress in "fixing" the bill.
We recommend that the bill clearly state that, "This bill does not apply directly or indirectly to livestock grazing." Your or committee staff may have better language but it should be very clear that the bill will have no impact on grazing. The bill currently says there will be impacts on grazing in any and all of the pilot project areas. This is still unacceptable.
Finally, per the request of Dallas Scholes, I am enclosing a copy of the resolution passed by the California Cattlemen's Association. At our general memberhip meeting, CCA staff asked for a clarification of the first resolved clause. The membership, by consensus, agreed that CCA should make every attempt to "kill" the bill if is not amended to remove grazing. As a result, we are instructed to work to ammend the bill and, if unsuccessful, we are to make every attempt to stop the bill's passage.
I hope this letter clarifies our positions. We look forward to working with you to alleviate this current problem. Please feel free to contact me at 916-444-0845 as often as needed so we can work closely on this issue.
Sincerely,
/s/
